Matakana Country Park

MatakanaCountry Park

Omaha Flats, Matakana
A country park set in the rolling countryside of Matakana, BDG Architects was responsible for the master planning of Matakana Country Park along with the design and documentation of the properties restaurant and museum buildings.

The result is an eclectic group of barn like structures.  Drawing on natural timbers and combining them with traditional farming materials such as corrugated iron, the group of structures give a nod to the farming history of the area. The barn vernacular is on one hand a quintessential, traditional New Zealand structure but on the other a modern, wide open interior space with large expanses of façade and interior wall space primed for museum displays and restaurant dining.  With typical features of a traditional barn such as timber panel exterior, deep red corrugate, exposed timber trusses of the gabled roof and small window openings, Matakana Country Park enables visitors to share the passion of the country setting.
